FC Barcelona, the mighty Spanish soccer club, is surprising the world with its latest initiative. A collaboration with the NFT World of Women project results in the second part of their “Empowerment” collection, which pays tribute to legendary players of both the past and present in a beautiful way.

FC Barcelona with new NFT

The new piece, titled “Empowerment,” was created by talented artist Rhi Madeline. It depicts the captain of the women’s team, Alexia Putellas, and “symbolizes transformation and the spirit of progress,” – explains the club.

The golden graphic features Putellas’ image from the Women’s Champions League semifinal match against German club Wolfsburg in 2022. This match made history in a special way, as Putellas scored two goals, leading her team to a very important victory.

The “Empowerment” auction will begin on June 26 and will take place exclusively on the OpenSea platform. Interestingly, the NFT will also have a practical application. The holder will get a chance to meet Putellas, receive her signed shoes. He will also become the owner of a physical piece of Barcelona’s stadium, Camp Nou.

Not an accidental choice of the NFT heroine

Shannon Snow, chief operating officer of World of Women , details the decision to partner with Barcelona and the motivation behind the project, which wants to support the development of the women’s national team in the world of soccer. She adds that Alexia Putellas is an inspiring figure who embodies these ambitious goals.

“Women’s participation in soccer and in women’s sports as a whole has always been a historical issue,” she says. – Snow explains, emphasizing that World of Women wants through this partnership to “truly highlight the power of women in the context of sports, while taking the time to have important conversations about the past and current challenges.”

“Alexia is one of the most successful female soccer players who represents the development of women in sports at one of the world’s top soccer clubs,” – Snow continues. “We want to immortalize the perseverance, ambition and strength of women like Alexia on the blockchain, creating a lasting legacy.”

Club experienced on NFT issuance

Barcelona’s first NFT masterpiece was the commemoration of Dutch soccer genius Johan Cruyff. Considered one of the greatest soccer players in history, Cruyff spent five successful years in Barcelona’s colors in the 1970s, the 20th century. In 1988, he returned to Barcelona as manager and over the next decade became the club’s longest-serving and most successful manager, winning 11 trophies, including four La Liga titles.

His own NFT masterpiece, titled “In its own way, immortal,” was sold at auction at Sotheby’s in July 2022. The digital artwork, uniquely numbered 1/1 and based on Ethereum Polygon, was a complete experience, including meetings with Cruyff, the opportunity to play at Camp Nou and much more. The price achieved at the auction was an impressive $693,000.
